The Collinsville Coalface Experience is a small mining museum in the mining town of Collinsville. Open for 6 years, the museum attracts visitors from across Australia and the world. Using a wide range of multimedia the Coalface Experience tells the story of the coal miner and his struggles, strife and mateship. Green Turtle has been involved in the project from the day the doors opened, providing graphic design, website design and multimedia design services. The website for the Coalface Experience provides a Flash based timeline tracing the history of coal in Collinsville. The website has been a great success with local schools, providing an interactive history lesson for children. Graphic design services have included brochure design and a large number of information signs found throughout the museum and outside. Multimedia design has been used in a number of ways throughout the museum. Firstly a full audio guide system was installed using Dataton Pickup. The audio guides are small handheld MP3 players that visitors can carry around and use with or without headphones. When they want to hear more about the display, they can point the MP3 palyer at an infra-red hotspot on the display and click play. Another multimedia display, sponsored by Queensland Mines Rescue and SIMTARS, were two touchscreen computers displaying images, audio and video about saftey underground. The first display focuses on the Coal Mine Disasters that have rocked Queensland, while the second display examines the development of technologies that save lives underground. The touchscreen displays have been such a great success that they have been replicated and used in displays at the Queensland Mines Rescue headquarters in Dysart.
